About this course

The guitar carries a history of styles as well as a set of techniques. This course explores guitar playing through theory, genre traditions and the choices that shape musical expression. It is relevant to learners interested in connecting what they play with how it sounds and feels.

Historical roots and the guitar’s place in blues, jazz, flamenco, rock and other traditions provide the opening context. Rhythm, melody and harmony then connect that history with the language used to understand music.

Develop the harmonic and rhythmic perspective

Chord voicings, triads, extended harmonies and genre-specific shapes are covered alongside scales and modal frameworks. Progressions, voice leading, chromatic movement and modulation extend the discussion from individual notes and chords to the way music develops.

Groove, syncopation and subdivision provide the rhythmic perspective. The course connects these topics with the patterns and timing associated with different styles.

Give the line its expression

Articulation, phrasing, legato, staccato, vibrato and stylistic techniques introduce the expressive side of playing. Dynamics, tone, attack, timbre and texture connect technique with the sound of the instrument and its setup.

Improvisation, songwriting, arrangement and ensemble work broaden the material. Listening, practice mindset and developing a personal style remain part of that wider view of musicianship.
